We went on a pre-run today of the 3.5-4.0 rated Double Sammy trail (no idea of the name origin) and it was for sure a 3.5+ trail. Unlike Moab where on most trails/obstacles you follow the two black tire tracks, this trail is very lightly used and sometimes there are very few clues where the trail goes on the slickrock part.
The guy in front of me took off a couple of times and I had no idea of where the trail went, so I would have to stop and have a lookee. Lots of the trail on the slip rock was fairly difficult and technical (and mandatory) and required very careful tire placement.
The last optional obstacle was a mini Hell's Gate (we haven't done Hell's Gate yet) and those who have done Hell's Gate said this was steeper but with good spotting we safely climbed right up.
As a first for us, we got to play a bunch in sand dunes - oh wow, what a hoot! The supercharger (lots of power) and the RubiCrawler (used in 4-high) and both axles locked up made for a completely good time. I climbed a so-so steep dune with the blower running about 8 pounds of boost. The throttle is wide open and we are going, going, going and then about 20 feet from the crest we stop and the tires are just digging in - that's it, we're done.
Backing down the dune is almost as thrilling as trying to climb it
.
Tomorrow is get the axle fixed day and then Friday and Saturday we are pre-running trails we are leading next week.
