Anyone know how this gas tank carrier is installed or have a link to installation details?

It appears that it is mounted to the quarter panel, but it looks like it would block the tailgate door from opening. Is it mounted to the tailgate?

I'd like to know as well. If it's mounted to the tailgate that would add a lot of weight out there on the end and there would be no access to the latch that I can see. I wager it is mounted to the corner panel and swings out. That's how I'd do it anyway.

There almost looks to be some sort of bracket from the lower brake light and from the tailgate.

Good detective work, but I'm afraid the answer is still vague. It looks like the bracket that hold the can spans both the quarter panel and the door!?!

 

honestly it looks like there is a bolt that goes right through the gap between the tailgate and tub

 

I dont know if its the best idea because of the added stress on the hinges, but that bolt that looks like it goes through the door I think is an optical illusion, that is the mounting bracket for the strap around the gerry can. I think those two bars mounted horizontally are bolted to the tailgate only because he wouldnt close off his rear door especially since he uses a hard top some of the times too

 

I think he just went Gung-Ho military and does not use the tailgate. Those WWII Jeeps didn't have a tailgate did they?

I suspect this guy is looking for a M-1 50 cal to mount in the rear as well.

I actually only ever fired one of those once. I used the M-85 on the tank.

 

Got this info so far from the builder...

"Yes, the tailgate opens with the jerry can mounted. It's pretty solid too, with minimal "jiggle" when full. The third brake light is mounted on the gate as well. The door handle is easy to pull, just behind the mount, & I can lock and unlock the gate from inside the jeep with a pull cable. Thanks for asking!"

Asked for some better photos and fab description of this mod also. Hopefully will have this soon.

 

I thought I read before that he moved the stock tire carrier over to the right some,
then made a bracket that mounted the can kinda hanging off the gate.

I would LOOOVE to do something like this, as I really dont want to put a heavy tire swing bumper on.
But I worry about the stock hinges being able to handle the weight.
Think they could handle the 5 Gal can and a 33" tire?

Are you talking about mine? No stock hinges on this. 1" pins. Brackets welded to rockmen corners. You could hang a cow on this. LOL

 

I have the OR-Fab tire/can carrier and it is great. Holds two cans close to the body and the tire away from the body. Also holds the hi lift and provides a mount for the CB antenna.

I have the same OR Fab carrier. So far I love it.

 

Same here with the OR-FAB....only problem would be if you are hung up on having the gate and tire swing together.
