What made you convert to JK?

1827 Views 27 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  jonster
Hey guys... I recently sold my TJ-rubicon and I feel like I lost a child. lol So that being said, I'm back in the market for a rubicon. I was just wondering if it would be worth holding out and looking for a Jk instead of the older style rubicon. I planned on getting an LJ or the new 2 door Jk most likely.

Do the new JKs ride better? Offer more room? How is the v6 compared to the only 4.0? Is there much different between the rubicon packages? I guess i'm just wanting to know if it would be a better base to start a new build off of. I would probably DD and wheel it on the weekend. Thanks for any/all opinions!

I've been wondering what most people think about this as well. Personally - I've THOUGHT about getting rid of my LJ Rubicon & then getting a JKU Rubicon if they ever offer a better engine. But, if I drop a large chunk of $ this spring on mods (like I'm planning), they won't be able to pry my LJ out of my hands. My primary reason for even thinking about it is I have 3 little ones & it sucks buckling them (only 2 of them @ a time) in the LJ. If Jeep were to offer the J7, bye bye. :(
There's strong talk of the Pentastar going in to the JKs for 2012.

Current JK will get better mileage than a TJ. My TJ gets about 11-12 mpg around town. (my old 6.0L V8 powered truck got that, and of course had much more power)

A friend has owned two JK Unlimiteds and both get 16-18 around town. His current JK as a Rubi.

A SWB JK has a lot more cargo room than a TJ

The 2011s have more elbow room up front vs the 07-10 models, this is due to some changes to the door and door panels... for me it meant "not banging my elbow in to the door". I've sat in 2011s and 07-10 models trying to get a feel for them.

JK Rubicon has electric disconnect swaybar.

Me personally, I'm holding out for the 2012 models to see what they offer, and may get a JK-U and have it be my daily driver.

I've read the same thing about the JKs & the Pentastars but find it really interesting that they would do this. I thought Jeep would use the Pentastar in a different Jeep model first - before putting it in the JK. Personally, I want a stripped JK w/ a new engine (Pentastar or CRD) and all of the "real" goodies from the Rubicon package (axles/lockers/tcase). Get rid of the pretty wheels also. Maybe I'll keep my LJ also. I can't see taking a Jeep w/ a pretty interior ('11+ JK) and beating the hell out of it offroad/camping.

I may keep my TJ too, and I agree on not beating up a nice rig.
bahahaha that's funny everyone is like... hmm maybe i like my tj/lj better!! The guys over at JF are opposite they love JKs... I am going to test drive a JK tonight and see what me thinks. I'll post back my findings!

btw what is so special about the penastar engine?
I don't have a JK. I do think they are very nice and have many nice qualities. There has just been a few design areas though in them that concern me personally. First, their axles seem to have some issues with the tubes and Cs. Not that the TJ & LJ axles are the best thing going, but they don't have those same issues overall. The good thing is though that there are kits readily availible to sleeve and gusset their axles. The others thing that concerns me personally is their B pillar on the 4 door models. It provides the mounting area & seal area for the doors as well as overall structural integrity of the body. One good whack though against a tree, rock or whatever and you have some major issues there to worry about! Doing a weld-in cage would help, but not totally solve the issue.

i like the 4 door for the ride and the room to take a fridge and can fold down the seat
n sleep in the JK.

people keep talking about the lack of power....
i have ZERO issues with power.
it`s not a race car....

when off road the JK does / goes where ever I want to.
when on the highway...it`s necessary to turn Off the overdrive on hills
mileage may vary...
i get 14-16 city and 20-24 highway.

it`s a shame I sold my 03 TJ rubi....i do miss it at times.

I do enjoy the JK ...
not sure when I will upgrade to another.

There was a JK in the showroom of the local dealer. I was very tempted to fold down the seat, crawl in and see what kind of sleeping room (length) was available, but I didn't have the courage to do it. good to know there is enough length.

:D

The friend that has owned two JKs has never complained about power. First was a Sahara, now a Rubi. Sahara had 3.73 gears

Funny buddy

Don't pm me. For one, takes me forever to respond and second.....well let's just say I don't like JK's. Before anyone flames me (which isn't allowed in ROF :lildevil: ) I've owned one and can bad mouth it all I want.

Honestly though, I think I am bi-polar because now I am and will have a Gladiator soon as they are taking orders. Gladiator is a fancy JK for those that are not up on current events. :rotflmao:
We have both a TJ Rubicon and a JK Rubicon. To be honest - (for what we do regarding off roading) I like the JK much better. There is no lack of power even with 2" lift and 33's I have on there now. The automatic and other comforts, along with the smoothe ride, make it more desirable for us.

I do wish I would have got the unlimited JK though. One day I may sell the 05 TJ. It's paid off so I really don't have to. I just do not use it that much any more.
I have both.....the JK is an "X" and needs gears...overall I like it, but still love getting in the ole tractor engine powered TJ Rubicon. But...for the family and light wheeling trips, the JK is great. Especially with the 3 Video screens in it. :cheesy:

That should tell you everything you need to know right there. They only thing you will ever learn at Jeep Foreskin is that 99% of the posters there (100% of the mods) are idiots and know next to nothing. That and what is the biggest tire I can fit on my stock jeep, asked 10 times a day.

I would skip the JK and wait to see if they come out the new engine/tranny in the next model. If not, stick with the TJ.
I'm with Mac on this. Everybody is talking about the engine's lack of power, the axles, blah blah blah. Here's some first hand experience from somebody who has owned both, AND heavily wheeled both........me.

I had a TJ on 37's w/ 5.13 gears, and now a JKU on 37's w/ factory, 4.10 gears. Check out my build thread in the JK section and see where I've been and what I've done with the Jeep so far. Filled with gear, tools, parts, fridge, camping equipment, etc all the way up to Canada to run the Whipsaw for a few days, and all the way down to California to run the Rubicon trail for a week. So far so good, and a few members on here can tell you just how well the Jeep did during some pretty tough stuff on the trails. I was doing 75 on the freeway w/ 37's and fully loaded with gear. Even though I could have gone faster, no need to. It's not legal and it puts others on the road in danger.

All this crying I hear about the motor/power is more often that not, people repeating what they've read on the internet. Why do you need to haul ass...it's a JEEP and it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. Ah, I feel much better :D

I would love to have a 4 door JK Rubicon for several reasons.
I like camping and destination, or expedition style wheeling so I'd more room for gear.
I could sleep in the back.
Longer control arms, electric lockers, bigger axles (I will get the sleeve and gusset kit
for mine whether it is necessary or not.), crossover steering, etc.

A guy I work with has an '07 or '08 Sahara 4-door and my '04 with 5.13s and 33s seems
to pull a little harder and a little longer from a dead stop but his is a MUCH better ride
on the street over all - especially when you get up to highway speeds.

Technically the JKs have a higher horse power rating but the TJs 4.0 is famous for its
flat torque curve - 85% of its torque at idle.

I'll probably wait to see if a newer motor looks more appealing, otherwise buy an older '08
or something next year some time.

If my wife wasn't back in school I'd probably just trade now and then trade again if a better
motor comes out. :cheesy:

I traveled to the Rubicon on this trip in my LJ on 37s and every time we stopped for gas Ryan had about a half tank when I was on 1/4. He also had more tools than I did (I didn't see any reason for both of us to pack the same stuff), weight might have been equal with my extra armor. He led most of the way and it looked like his jeep rode a lot better than mine and was less affected by the wind. On the trail he had no problems.

Personally a JKU is on my list once the LJ is done for a daily driver. I want both and will keep the JK mostly stock for touring and moderate trails and the LJ will be for the harder stuff. I sometimes miss the days when my LJ was stock and every trail was a challenge.
So far the only JK I test drove ran like crap (it was a used Sahara) - it had a minor misfire of some sort, so i can't really comment with regards to "does it have enough power". When I drive it, I was mostly comparing it to the Liberty I had just finished driving before hoping in the JK.

My thinking is "if there's a new motor going in them soon, hold out and get that model instead. I also won't be ready to buy until about the time the 2012 models hit the showrooms. If they are making deals on left over 2011s, then I might snatch up one of them, but so far, Rubicon models are hard to find near me.

:D

:D :D That's kind of my line of thinking too. I'm still up in the air air about keeping the TJ or not though.
