Can anyone tell me why the swing out tire carrier has become the norm? I was thinking about a design where the tire would be lowered down towards the ground. It wouldn't take much and the tire would be 10 times easier to get off the carrier and replace. You could even bolt it onto the stock bumper.

I was even thinking that you could probably use the stock tire carrier as the latching point. That way you could retain the brake light. Any thoughts?

I forgot to mention that you could put a spring on it to help lifting it back into place. My 80 lb spare tire assembly is fricken heavy but it wouldn't be hard to put something on for lifting assistance.

the weight is why. if you have to add springs and things to assist, you defeat the simplisity of it. though i would like to change my tailgate so it drops down instead of swings.
