Oil Filter and Motor Oil

5881 Views 28 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  mstrofpuppets
Getting ready for the first oil change on my JK. On my TJ, I used the Napa Gold 1515 filter because it allowed me to use a full quart more than factory specs. I also used Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oil. Plan on using Mobil 1 F/S again, but not sure what's out there for oil filters. Anybody have any good recommendations?

I use only WIX (Napa Gold is WIX).
now I know you dont have a flat tappet cam motor any more, but you still ought to check if you have to run a specific oil acea-a3 or something else
I used the Mobil 1 filter and oil when I had my JK. It was still running just fine when I traded it in..

I used the same thing on the avatar pic.

I believe DocD mentioned something about using the Donaldson filter on the JK. I think he said it was the same as the TJ. Don't quote me, I'll have to go back and search for that thread or he'll chime in and confirm or correct me...
Did a little snooping around and decided I'm going to run Mobil 1 Fully Syn. once again, but go with the factory recommened 5w-20 and either a Mobil 1 filter, or OEM Mopar one as long as they don't charge $75 for it at the stealership.
I run the mobil 1 oil, but only used a mobil 1 filter one time. It ALWAYS had lifter tick at startup, unless it had only sat for an hour or something. Switched to WIX, and no tapping, or Mopar filter I guess, but Wix may be cheaper.
As far as I know, the Mopar filter is a WIX one. Just picked it up from the dealer for $8. I had some trouble finding the 5w-20, but after looking around town, I finally found it at Wal-Mart of all places.
I fail to see your point
Been using K&N oil filter @ about $11 bucks a pop. Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 full syn because its freakin hot here in FL. Grabbed the last batch of T6 at pep boys as they were running a 2FER special. Probably overkill but it makes me feel good....
mopar filters are made by CHAMPION or CHAMP as they are more commonly known and are not the same company as the spark plug people. if you look inside and see that it has a metal core INSIDE the filter element, its not bad, if it has plastic, put it back ITS JUNK its the same thing as CHamp's new plastic core filter known as the E-CORE line of filters. mobil one filters and and K&N filters are the same as the old style metal core CHAMP filters but really arent worth the extra $$$$ this is also true of ford racing's HIGH PERFORMANCE filters. if you want a decent filter that is well priced, stick with purolator. motorcraft is also a rebadged purolator, however some motorcrafts have the drainback valve at the open end of the filter instead of the closed end. having it at the open end is preferred over the closed especially on a filter that mounts vertically. I was always an AC delco fan especially on my GM vehicles but I just recently found that ac delco is no longer making their own filters either and CHAMP is also making them now and using their crap plastic core design. no more AC delcos for me.
the ONLY readily available filters I suggest using are purolator/motorcraft or wix/napa. donaldsons are GREAT but a little more difficult to come by.
stick with a good oil like mobil one and you cant go wrong.

my oil and filter is changed by my Dealer

it`s 19.95 OTD

motor is covered under warranty and the Dealer takes care of any issues on my JK

example:
complete rear axle <--- 100% replaced
transmission leak <---- 100% covered
power steering issue <--- 100% covered
Nav Radio <--- replaced 2 times
Front brake problem <--- 100% covered Fronts ( I had them replace the rear brakes at the same time )

i`m very satisfied with the service on the JK
my TJ <--- 4" LA AiROCK they fixed the tranny and axle seals TB rebuild covered
my YJ <----- replaced rear 100% complete axle ( it was out of warranty by years not by miles )

in my opinion...
it pays in the long run to do simple maintenance with them.

I've been seeing various Mopar oil filters at Wal-Mart but I haven't paid any attention to what sizes they have.

Hard to justify changing it yourself when it's that cheap to have the dealer do it.

Self change = Time / cost involved to buy supplies to do it, time and mess of doing it, time and mess of taking the old oil for disposal. mess of getting rid of old filter in trash.

I wish local C/J/D dealers offered a service like my two Chevy dealers do... Free LOF's for life on purchase of a new vehicle.

My Aveo - I've changed it only twice myself in the 69k miles I've owned it. once at about 1000 miles, then on a trip when I was out of town and it needed an oil change.

My Silverado Duramax, unbelievable as it is, they do free LOFs on it too! My dad takes his GMC Duramax to the same dealer and has to pay for the same service and it costs him about $100.

Oh, I see a "preferred customer" .

I'm a "sustaining member." Think that'll carry any weight with them? C'mon Mac, use your clout!
