Does Air conditioning have a pressure relief?

Out on the trail last week I turned on the AC, work fine. Had it off for awhile, then turned it on later in the day. Heard like a short discharge from the engine and smelled maybe freon. Turned it off, then tried again in about 5 minutes and AC worked fine. Any thoughts on what this may have been? Going to have it checked out, but thought maybe some folks here have experienced that before.

Yes, there is a pressure relief valve on the compressor's manifold (small hole on back) that blows and what I have read, somewhere around 500psi. I am surprised your unit did not turn off automatically due to the high pressure limit switch.
