I found a '99 cherokee with I believe around 75-100k miles. It has a cracked head gasket WITH coolant/oil mixture. So now the Jeep is being sold as is for about $1500, which I believe is a little high. What would you do?

Even though it can be fixed, I would walk.
Really depends on what you want to do with the rig... $1500 seems reasonable if it's in good condition but you will need a new motor.
Yeah i was just researching surrounding junk yards and matching model/year 4.0's range from 900-1300.

You can buy a new engine from Advanced Auto for the same.
I would definitely pass-way too high. At least in our area. Not sure what they go for in your area. I recently lost out on a '99 XJ 4.0 HP 30 front, etc., etc. with body in excellent shape, not a dent/scratch on it, interior immaculate and amazingly clean/nice for it's age-garage kept it's entire life, think it was around 170K miles with all fresh engine work done, only thing they said it needed that they couldn't fix was something with the brakes. One of those deals where they didn't have funds to fix it and decided to sell it. I have enough spare parts laying around from the Jeep that this would be a non-issue. Asking price was-get this -$400 OBO. I called and said hold it, I'll be up in two hours (drive to get it). Got there, they sold it before I could get there. There's several good runners around here local for under $600 in good shape. A few modded ones in great shape as well for $1500 or less. Dealers are wanting $3-$5K for them (nice ones), but private party is MUCH less. At $1500 for what you found there, and knowing it needs a lot of engine work, I'd pass for sure.

Best of Luck,

Mike

I would have been pissed.
They could have at least called you back and told you to turn around and go home.

Yeah I havent talked to him yet (I know the guy from the cigar shop) so I'm gonna see how he is with the price. I'm interested enough just to see, but if he wont come down a good bit, then I'm done with it.
This is a little unethical; but if you’re moral compass is a little off. Put a reasonable offer in and leave your phone number. Make a mental note of all discrepancies that you find on the rig.
A day or so later; have a couple of your wheeling buddy’s stager in a few days apart to make offers that are less then yours. Make sure you brief them on the discrepancies that you found. They can use this to piss and moan about repair cost and unknown risk with blown engine.
I will bet that you get that phone call to come and pick up the Jeep…
I've found CASH talks. If your top dollar is say a $Grand, then walk in with 10 new, crisp $100 bills. Small talk a little bit, talk about what it's going to cost to fix problems and the always "unknowns" when buying used. Tell them you're ready to buy and you'll give them $1000. Say I've got the cash now and we can do this now. Take it or leave it approach. Be prepared to walk away. Don't have another couple hundred in your pocket. Figure out what you're willing to pay and make an offer. If you have a hard time with closing deals, do it an hour before lunch and have lunch with a buddy scheduled. This forces you to get in and out.

All they can say is NO!

I'm a pretty good negotiator and actually enjoy it. I know a lot of people fret over these kinds of deals. It's really a matter of determining what you are willing to pay. What is YOUR TOP DOLLAR! then make your move.

Good Luck!

This is a good strategy, one I employ myself regularly. To add to this however, have the necessary paper work ready and with you. Here in NE you need to have a signed and dated bill of sale as well as the title signed by both buyer and seller. So to make things easier and look a bit more professional bring a blank bill of sale with you, and in this case it sounds like you need a trailer too, bring both and cash. :lildevil:
That's high - the body, interior, suspension, - everything should be in really good shape and no rust.
