Side .Mounted Gerry Can Racks

Is anybody using the Morryde side mounted gerry can racks?
For the TJ they mount to the frame and suppprt the rack from underneath.
I like the idea but wonder if they will bang on the body in rough situations.

Jerry cans on the side of the Jeep? Yikes! Buy GenRight's expedition gas tank, it holds 31 gallons.

They're supposed to hold 31, but mine actually holds closer to 32 gallons. It's an LJ only item though. Doesn't fit TJ's.

I don't like the looks of those frame mounted jerry can holders at all. And by "don't like the looks" I don't mean that I care at all about the appearance or aesthetics. I mean I just don't like that whole setup at all. If it locks up really rigid and you keep the straps tight the can might not ever make contact with your tub, maybe. But talk about a Mickey Mouse way of carrying a jerry can...

If you really want them there, I'd go for the mounts that just bolt right up to the fenders.

I have the 19 gallon tank but would like 10 more.
I'm rethinking the side mount - it would make the Jeep too wide - probably 18-24" overall added width.
I think I'll rework my back bumper/tire carrier to hold the two gerry cans.

You can get jerry can holders that are already made and mount on your tire carrier. Rock Hard makes them and you can get them from Quadratec.

Edit: Whoops already posted info. Here it is again.

The Crawler™ Safari Gas Tank will only fit the Jeep Unlimited LJ (2005-2006).

I suppose it depends upon your application, meaning where and how you drive. But a side mounted Gerry can is vulnerable in a side tipover, or getting damaged when passing rocks and trees.

It may be primitive, but I use a short piece of 2"x2" square tubing inserted in the receiver hitch, supporting two Blitz cans in the clamp-style holders. The receiver insert sometimes drags on the rocks, but I only use it when I need it, and always top off the tank and stow it in the body of the Jeep after burning 10 gallons on the trail.

Rethinking things sounds like the way to go. I looked at their website and what got my attention first was the trays support bars hanging down just waiting for something to snag on them.

Sorry...I totally disagree
I did it on my 03 Rubi ....2 5 Gal Fuel cans mounted on side in front of door hinges
Absolutely ZERO issues with side mounted 5 gal cans

Did a lot of desert runs back then...it was awesome to have extra fuel
i went through a lot of changes...once i put on the Airock system the fuel cans were taken off ...and I get a larger fuel tank from Gen Right

Mac, just to play the devils advocate here I think the post concerning where you're driving holds a lot of truth. I've done a lot of desert running with my buddy Jeff_in_RC the past few years and have noticed that the desert is a lot more "open" as compared to our mountain trails up here in Northern California. Not arguing, just saying.
