Saw this at the Orlando Jeep club Show and Shine yesterday. The guy fabricated this for his Savvy sliders. Pretty nice job, but you need a lathe and 1" bar and plate aluminum. The actual step portion was knurled 1" bar threaded into the plate. The tethered pin is removed to remove the assembly.

The Savvy aluminum sliders are awesome.

Very creative idea and great execution. Removing the pin looks like it would require a bit of contortionist maneuvering though for us older folks.
