Post ESP Trouble Code won't clear
Anybody had this issue? I was messing around with my ProCal Module and setting different options on my Jeep's computer. The module is really cool and is super easy to use. It has a function that clears engine trouble codes, but I couldn't get it to clear the ESP trouble light. The light trips when a wheel sensor comes unplugged, goes missing, gets damaged, or sometimes working on your steering system can trigger the light. The light came on after installing the AEV highsteer kit. A check and inspection of the sensors reveals nothing visually wrong with them, so removed the positive battery cable and let the Jeep sit for about 10 minutes.....still no luck. Any ideas?

Is your steering wheel perfectly level with the front tires dead on straight?

Here is where I had my problem and I posted my cure and results

Excellent, thanks! So, I set the steering wheel straight with the ProCal already. I guess my next step is to ensure the steering wheel is sitting dead center, then crank the adjuster sleeve until it looks like the wheels are sitting perfectly straight. Does that sound about right? That's what I gathered from the link you provided.

Yes.

I had to do mine by myself, so what I did is made sure front tires are straight. I drove in the shop, backed up and pulled back in a couple of times. Then I hung a piece of tape from the windshield to what I felt is the level/center upper part of the steering wheel.

Each time I made a turn on the adjuster on the draglink I would stand up and look at the tape. Never fails though, I started off turning it the wrong way... lol. I made 1/4 turns until I got it. Tighten things up and drove it for a few days. The puter would reset itself.

The first time I did it, it seems like it took a few days to reset. I knew then my steering wheel still wasn't dead on level but figured close enough.

Second time I kept at it til I got that wheel level and then it only took a few miles to reset.

Very happy I posted my problem on ROF. To take it in for an alignment would have costed me 75 bucks a pop. Doing it myself saved a few bucks and really didn't take all that long, 2 nuts, couple of turns and tighten the nuts back up and done. Hardest part was trying to figure out which way too turn the adjusting collar and how many times...

I had the light come on after my high steer kit. I drove about a mile and it went off.

So I hooked up the ProCal so I could see where dead center of the steering wheel was, and I adjusted the sleeve to set it straight. Once the computer indicated the wheel was straight, I tightened everything down and took it for a drive. Well, the steering wheel was a bit more off from center than when I started, and of course the light didn't clear due to this. My next attempt will be to jack up the front end so there in no weight on the tires, adjust again and try to find dead center of the steering wheel. Would jacking up the front end make a difference? My thinking is that the tires are trying to "push and pull" due to the weight of the Jeep while sitting on the ground, offering alot of resistance against what I'm trying to do.....make sense?

One thing I did was to tape a dowell to the steering wheel after I was sure where straight was from driving on the freeway. That way I could see the top of the dowell as I turned the drag link sleeve. Mine was off center from the dealer and I didn't want to drive back to them to get it fixed. Worked great. Never got any esp light though.

Finally had a chance to take a look at the steering again. This time I jacked up the front end and got the wheels in the air so they weren't fighting the pavement. I hooked up the ProCal and adjusted until the steering wheel was centered. It took a few miles, but the ESP code finally cleared and all is well. Unfortunatley for me, I drove around town for several miles and the code didn't clear until I was confident that it wouldn't, so I hit the freeway. At about 65 MPH the steering started acting a bit funny and the Jeep seemed to jerk around a bit when I hit the throttle. That's when I looked at the gauge cluster and saw the EPS light blinking, indicating it was attempting to clear itself. Was quite a ride, but it all worked out, and now I have no more trouble code. So I guess the lesson learned is, drive around for several more miles on surface streets.
