 NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
A buddy and I are planning an excursion trip next easter. Looking for easy scenic trails (He has a lightly modded H3 and I will be taking my mostly stock LJ). looking on suggestions on trails. We would prefer something more than just dirt roads, but still easy.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
Here in Co there are plenty of trails that are mostly dirty but anywhere from easy to challenging ha ha. if you swing by and if i am back from my mos cross training i will hook you with your group and take you on a few.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
We have over 2,800 trails in Utah, yo'll have to narrow it down a bit there bud. I've been on darn near all of them. Specific areas that I wouldn't miss is the San Rafael Swell area, Kanab (Grandstaircase Escalante Area), and San Juan County. Give me the highway route you intend on driving, the max rating of trail you are willing to run (10 scale please), and how much time you'll have. I can better help you then with suggestions. I have the GPX files for all as well, to include every state you are looking at except NM. Our club has a run from 10-14 Apr in the Kingman area if you might be interested in that.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
Thanks,
Trails would have to be easier ones since I will have a mostly stock H3 with me, and I will be driving my lightly modded LJ and not the offroad TJ andtowing a trailer (m416). Say 3-4 max with 10 being very hard.We are looking more for scenery/being off the beaten path than rock crawling.
We will be driving out from NC along 40 but can swing up 70 if that works better. we figure 2 days there, 5 days trail riding and a couple of days back. A multi day trail is good also.
Hope that narrows it down a bit.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
Well if you don't swing up by I 70 somewhere you're not going to be spending time in Utah. Well the LJ bonestock if it's Rubi model can handle anything 1 to 7. I wheeled my Tj/Unlimited like crazy bonestock for a year. The H3 I don't know much about. In the month of April you're not going to have hardly any trails what so ever to run in Colorado. Most of their scenic trails run from very late July through mid September due to the 60 or so feet of snow they get each year. The lower elevation trails for the most part are extremely hardcore, "O crap I'm on my rrof again" type trails. April howver though is a great time to visit Utah just north and south of I-70 on the east side. To the north you have the San Rafael Swell that will rival anywhere in the lower 48 for scenic wise and just enough challenge to keep it interesting. Trails such as Devils Racetrack, Fix it Pass, Buckhorn Wash, Eagle Canyon, Copper Globe and my personal favorite Eva Conaver. 45 minutes to the south you have Moab. You could run I-70 to Rt 6 (Green River, Ut), run that northwest for about an hour, then turn south into the Swell running Cleveland Quary, to Buckhorn, to Fix it Pass, to Eva Conaver, to Secret Mesa, to Eagle Canyon, (that can be all completed in a day, then connect back up with I-70 at Head of Sinbad run I-70 east for about 30 miles, take the Crescent Junction exit (182) head 45 minutes to Moab and considering you want scenic I would run Shafer Trail, or a trio of Klondike Bluff/Tower Arch/Eye of the Whale. That last set has dinosaur footprints, to really good arches on them and lots of slickrock. Once completed there head south on 313 towards Blanding and the Arizona border. Keep going to you hit Chilne Arizona. This is where Canyon De Chilly is at. Google it, it's phenominal. Better yet just go to my clubs link of past events. San Rafael Swell Photos http://www.zutah.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=220Canyon De Chilly photos http://www.zutah.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=828Once you are done there swing into New Mexico.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
The Maze District, Canyonlands, UT Easy trails with some rock and ledges. Amazing scenery. Few people. Requires permit. Apply now. Another suggestion would be Elephant Hill to the Devils Kitchen campsite in the Needles District of Canyonlands, but that backcountry permit may be a bit tougher to get.

Click on the lin, click on the album entitled "avatars", the one with me in Tony Schumacher's Top Fuel Rail then you'll see the two maps. Never had an issue ever before linnking photos, not sure why now.

I run with a couple of guys and we were up there a couple of years ago, me for a week, them for two or more. That is a great area and I only saw a sample of it. If you ever run in to a YJ with Nightcrawler on the hood, that would be Guy Conway, he goes out every day from daylight till way after dark. I saw the Swazy cabin in the dark. When he says Nightcrawler it's no BS. LOL Not sure where we'll end up this October, but it'll be somewhere around there. There's a million miles of things to see in Utah and most days you won't even lock the hubs.

 Re: NM/AZ/UT/CO excursions
Hey if you're coming around in October we got a trip going from Grand Junction to Moab on some seriously rarely used trails. Could be very interesting if you are interested. The dates are 1 to 3 October.

Don't know because I haven't been on most of them but by the descriptions of my research I probably wouldn't bring the trailer. You're welcome on the new places to go. So many people buzz right down I70 and don't have the slightest idea as to what they are missing.
