2004 Rubicon Rear Axle Lock Problem

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to diagnose my rear axle lock issue. The front axle locks, but my rear axle lock light just blinks. When I was driving in reverse, trying to lock the rear axle, I heard a loud metallic click/thump and the rear axle lock light kept blinking. It stopped blinking for 30 seconds, but then started blinking again.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Blinking means electronically engaged but not in lock position.

Sounds like it grenaded. Mine did it last summer. Was lucky it didn't screw up my new gears and found a replacement locker cheap on craigslist.

2004 Rubicon Axle Lock Update

I pushed the locker button with the engine off. The pump turned on and it didn't shut off for rear locker. When I pushed it again to activate front axle lock, the pump stayed on and made a sound like breathing in and out.
The front axle light stayed lit and the rear axle light blinked.

What is the next step? Thanks.

Not an expert.

I think you said you had clunking so maybe your locker is busted. If you got clunking maybe time for the shop if you don't want to mess with it at home.

The lights, blinking means your switch has sent power to the pump. Solid light your locker is engaged, not sure, but think the sensor is inside the differencial. If the pump is running and light is blinking check your air line, pump to locker. Mine was disconnected inside the differential, common problem. So if your air line is OK, pump to differential, you still need to take a look inside. That means draining the oil and taking off the cover. If you find a leak or disconnected line your fix is cheap. Again if you got clunking your blinking light is probably not the pump or air line you have some broken metal parts.

Sometimes some slow rotation of the axle helps them engage.

Do that before opening the diff etc.

Could lift the rear and see if it's locking or not.

The locker light is activated by a plunger type switch inside the diff housing - when the air bladder inflates to push the mechanism over to engage, the switch operates. Sometimes the switch will be out of position and not work properly if somebody tore into the diff and didn't put it back together properly.
